What Is Dry Eye?
Dry eye can be an irritating and uncomfortable sensation. When our eyes don’t produce enough tears or the right type of tears, we don’t have the lubrication necessary to support healthy vision.
People with dry eye can experience multiple symptoms, including:
- Dry eyes
- Redness
- Blurry vision
- Light sensitivity
- Watery eyes
- Stringy mucus
- Gritty or scratchy eyes
- Burning or stinging eyes
If dry eye is left untreated, it can advance. As symptoms worsen, it may damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision.
Discussing treatment with our optometrists can help you find a solution that fits your lifestyle. Book an appointment today and discover how our treatment options, including OptiLight by Lumenis, can help alleviate your symptoms.

What Is OptiLight by Lumenis?
OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.
The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

How Does It Work?
OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.
This application can significantly relieve dry eye indicators and has a multi-factorial effect, including:
- Increasing tear break-up time
- Reducing the amount of Demodex mites and bacteria living around your eyes
- Eliminating blood vessels that contribute to inflammation
- Improving meibomian gland functionality

What to Expect
The OptiLight treatment is typically 4 sessions, with each session 2–4 weeks apart. Most patients feel improvement after the second or third appointment.
Before
When you arrive for your appointment, we’ll bring you to a chair to sit and relax for your session. Before treatment, we’ll apply eye shields and a thin layer of coupling gel on the treatment area.
During
OptiLight sessions take about 15 minutes. During treatment, you may experience a warm sensation as light touches your skin.
After
There’s no downtime, so you can return to daily activities immediately after treatment! Some patients experience redness after treatment, but it fades within a few hours.
Will the OptiLight Work for Me?
While OptiLight by Lumenis is an effective dry eye management solution, we want to make sure it’s right for you. We do not recommend this treatment if you:
- Suffer from aqueous deficiency dry eye (rather than evaporative dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction)
- Have a history of keloid scarring
- Have severe scarring around your eyes
Ultimately, your doctor is the only person who can determine whether this option is right for you. During your next appointment, ask us if you are a good candidate for OptiLight by Lumenis.
